The Explorers’ Club Dinner and Presentation with Panthera President Dr. Luke Hunter

Panthera

The leopard is the quintessential cat: stealthy, secretive and adaptable. It is able to exist in virtually all habitats from hyper-arid desert massifs in the Sahara to the dense equatorial forests of central Africa - the only African cat that occurs in both. The leopard eats prey ranging from dung beetles to wildebeest, and survives on domestic dogs near major cities; it can drink water from thermal springs and traverse Kilimanjaro’s snowline. However, all this adaptability comes at a price - the leopard occupies a conservation blind-spot, and is rarely thought of as threatened or needing conservation action. But the species has lost over 35% of its historic range in Africa and far more again throughout Asia. Unsustainable legal trophy-hunting and illegal killing by people are among the leading threats that make the leopard the most hunted big cat on earth.

Join Panthera’s President, Dr. Luke Hunter, at The Explorers Club on Thursday, October 17th, for an exclusive dinner and presentation on The Leopard in Africa: Conserving the World’s Most Persecuted Big Cat.

Following a reception at 6pm and members dinner at 7pm, Dr. Hunter will present on solutions that address the conservation challenges facing the leopard; solutions ranging from how Panthera uses rigorous science to understand and control the worst excesses of trophy hunting, to cooperating with followers of the ‘Shembe’ religion in southern Africa to address their exploding - and unsustainable - practice of wearing leopard skin capes. Saving the leopard requires a combination of ingenious science, negotiating out-dated conservation policies, and working with very disparate and controversial stakeholder communities - a unique challenge for a unique cat.
