Our photo of the day was taken of a young lion after an unsuccessful porcupine hunt, evidenced by the quills stuck in his mouth and chest! Not to worry, Panthera's wildlife photographer partner, Christian Sperka, reported that the lion was simply inexperienced and clumsy, and when seen 2 days later, was free of the quills.

Football, or any kind of sport, isn't the typical topic of choice during media interviews with Panthera's wild cat scientists. Recently, however, Panthera's President, Dr. Luke Hunter, spoke with a sports reporter from the Wall Street Journal to share lessons that can be learned from wild cats and applied to American football. Read the article to learn about the New York Jets and Tim Tebow’s use of the 'wildcat formation' and how the Jets might be able to improve their offense by taking a look at the successful ‘plays’ of wild lions.

A Maned Lioness, Explained – Part II

Ryan Green

Yesterday, we received some questions/comments about the authenticity of our photo of the day showing a maned lioness in Botswana‘s Okavango Delta. Today, we’d like to share another, more telling photo of this maned lioness, specifically her backside, to alleviate any doubts about this lioness’ gender.

Be sure to read an explanation from Panthera’s President, Dr. Luke Hunter, on the science behind this maned lioness, featured on National Geographic’s NewsWatch.

Panthera

A recent article published by Matador Network entitled "Is Zimbabwe's Lion Encounter a Misdirected Conservation Program?" features reporter Roni Weiss’ investigation of Lion Encounter – a ‘walking with lions’ operation run under the umbrella of ALERT (African Lion & Environmental Research Trust) in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. After participating in a Lion Encounter excursion, including walking with and taking photos and videos with a group of captive-bred lions, Mr. Weiss consulted Panthera's President and lion scientist, Dr.

Our photo of the day is a stunning image of two Red Lechwes at sunrise in Zambia's Kafue National Park. Antelope like the lechwe are common in Zambia and share habitat with the African lion. Today, Zambia is 1 of only 7 countries estimated to have more than 1,000 wild lions. Panthera supports The Kafue Lion Project (KLP) in Zambia to protect these big cats.
