Wild cat rangers work in some of the harshest conditions on the planet, often risking their lives, to help protect the world’s wild cats. For a minimum $50 donation, you can outfit a wild cat ranger with the supplies needed to effectively protect big cats from their most critical threats.

How it helps

Whether based in the icy temperatures of Mongolia's Tost Mountain Range, or the steamy tropics of Indonesia these patrol teams are no strangers to adversity in the field. They battle temperatures reaching highs of 120°F and lows of -58°F, rain and sand storms, flooding, illnesses including malaria, yellow fever, dengue fever, and parasites, swarms of mosquitoes, and threats from poachers - and this is all in the day of a life of a park guard.

Provide these men and women with the proper protection and supplies they need to effectively conserve big cats. A minimum $50 gift will support wild cats and the patrol teams working to protect them in one of the following ways:

• Provide waterproof boots for a member of an anti-poaching patrol unit protecting tigers
• Provide a lion anti-poaching patrol with wire cutters used to remove snares
• Provide a protective snake-bite kit for rangers working to protect jaguars in the tropical and subtropical forests of Central and South America
• Provide binoculars for rangers tracking Asia’s elusive ‘Mountain Ghost,’ the snow leopard

• Deploys one camera trap to survey snow leopards in Mongolia (up to 150 traps used at snow leopard study sites).
• Provides field supplies for scientists to monitor the activities of leopards, including fuel for patrol vehicles, binoculars, flashlights, waterproof boots and more.

Wild cats live in some of the harshest conditions in the world, and some, like the snow leopard (nicknamed Asia’s ‘Mountain Ghost’) are notorious for being elusive and are seldom seen by humans in the wild. In these conditions, one of the critical monitoring tools Panthera uses across all of our wild cat conservation programs is the camera trap – remote-triggered cameras which allow us to ‘count cats,’ identify where endangered cats live, assess if they are breeding and what is happening to their cubs, and mitigate threats to their survival. Camera traps act as windows into the secret lives of wild cats around the globe, and often, these traps pick up more than just cats!

A minimum gift of $1,000 sponsors a Panthera camera trap and provides our scientists with critical data needed to monitor individual cats and larger wild cat populations, which ultimately help us determine if our conservation actions are having the intended effect – an increase in cat numbers.
