STF-Panthera Grant Program

The 2011 intake round is now closed.
The next intake round will open July 2012.

Save the Tiger Fund (STF) is partnering with Panthera to leverage resources and co-fund tiger conservation projects that adhere to a comprehensive tiger conservation protocol (Rabinowitz, 2009).

The STF-Panthera Grant Program supports the most important activities required to save tigers in the wild. To this end, STF and Panthera agree that successful applicants will reflect the Tigers Forever philosophy: a razor-sharp focus on effectively mitigating key threats, proving success through scientific measurement and monitoring. Tigers Forever was initiated in 2006 with the Wildlife Conservation Society, and Panthera continues to support Tigers Forever related activities at several long-term WCS sites. With this new partnership, STF and Panthera are seeking more partners; our scientific, technical, and financial support is not exclusive and is available to anyone (individuals, organizations, etc) who can demonstrate proven conservation action to save tigers in the wild. We encourage everyone able to work within the guidelines presented below to apply.

Projects supported by this partnership will:

  • identify and directly address critical threats to source populations,
  • undertake rigorous assessments of tiger population status in core areas, and
  • measure and monitor project performance and results.

Activity Priorities: Our objective is to secure the most significant remaining wild tiger populations by mitigating the critical threats to breeding source populations. We support direct interventions that protect tigers, associated prey populations and the habitats on which these species depend. All of the projects we support will quantify and monitor the results of these interventions. Successful projects will typically demonstrate all or most of the following activities:

  • Establish effective protection measures to counter poaching of tigers and prey in close collaboration with protected area management teams (e.g., anti-poaching patrol units, wildlife crime intelligence networks),
  • Establish systems to monitor law enforcement effectiveness (e.g., MIST or other suitable systems),
  • Reduce and prevent human-tiger conflict situations and reduce retaliatory killing of tigers where these are deemed a significant threat to population viability,
  • Establish science-led, peer reviewed tiger and prey monitoring system in core breeding populations.

Proposed Project Start Dates: Call for proposals will be made in September 2011 with funding available for projects starting from January, 2012 onwards.

Awards: STF/Panthera will consider proposals of up to $150,000. All other funding available or being sought from other sources should be described to present a complete picture of the project funding to the reviewers.

Panthera does not support:

  • Conferences
  • Travel to scientific meetings
  • Legal actions
  • Overhead costs
  • Captive breeding

Duration of Activity: Annual targets and budgets must be defined within project durations of three to five years. Project performance is evaluated every 12 months with multi-year support contingent on performance against agreed targets.

Priority areas for STF/Panthera grants: STF/Panthera are focusing investments in securing significant breeding tiger populations ('source populations') embedded within high priority tiger conservation landscapes (TCL). The broadest areas of interest are as follows:

  • The Terai of India and Nepal
  • Greater Manas landscape of Bhutan and India
  • Brahmaputra floodplains of North East India
  • Central tiger landscape and Eastern Ghats of India
  • Western Ghats of India
  • Sundarbans mangrove forests of India and Bangladesh
  • Larger protected areas of the Russian Far East
  • Hukaung Valley in Myanmar
  • Huai Kha Khaeng and Thung Yai Naresuan in Thailand
  • Kaeng Krachan/Kuiburi in Thailand
  • Nam Et-Phou Louey, Lao PDR
  • Endau Rompin, Malaysia
  • Taman Negara National Park, Malaysia
  • Belum-Temenggor Forest, Malaysia
  • Leuser-Ulu Masen, Kerinci Seblat and Bukit Barisan Selatan landscapes of Sumatra's Barisan range
  • Larger tiger landscapes of central and east Sumatra

Applicants wishing to work in areas that are not listed here should send an initial summary of their intended project site, the current tiger population status and their proposed activities to grants@panthera.org.

All proposals to the STF-Panthera fund must define how resources will be directed to secure breeding populations.

Project Expectations: Projects must be able to demonstrate a very convincing potential for protecting and increasing core tiger populations. Applicants must include information on anticipated outputs (i.e. activities conducted or products produced during the proposed funding period) and outcomes (i.e. results, effects, consequences) for their project. STF/Panthera will prioritize funding for proposed activities that best meet its conservation priorities. Proposals not meeting the priorities and requirements outlined in this funding announcement will not be considered.

Genetic Analysis: In partnership with the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH), Panthera has developed the Global Felid Conservation Genetics Program. The program focuses on the molecular ecology of endangered felid populations and promotes, when preferable, the use of noninvasive sampling to understand genetic issues relevant to felid conservation. For details on the program, please visit the Global Felid Conservation Genetics Program page.

How to Apply: The STF-Panthera Grants open on the 17th of August and close on September 30th. Final decisions and awards are announced within 3 months of the application deadline. Panthera’s grant programs are facilitated through an online grant management system, Foundant. All applications for Panthera grants must be submitted through Foundant.
