Arabian Leopard Initiatives: A Conservation Partnership
Panthera and The Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) have entered into an historic partnership to recover the critically endangered Arabian leopard and leopard populations around the globe. RCU has committed $US 20 million to leopard conservation in the AlUla region and around the world over the next decade. This will be achieved through several initiatives including;
  • scientific research,

  • captive breeding programs,

  • international collaborations,

  • community-based conservation projects, and

  • a global fund focused on the protection and enhancement of remaining wild populations.

Listen to Panthera Chairman Tom Kaplan speak with the BBC World Service - Newshour about the Arabian Leopard and our new partnership with the RCU.

The Arabian Leopard Initiatives (ALI) that will be at the heart of the agreement aim to deliver a sensitive and responsible transformation of the AlUla region and its unique constellation of heritage, nature, and art.

The critically endangered Arabian leopard is hovering on the brink of extinction, but we will work together to reverse years of persecution and grow this population to its full potential.

Dr. Thomas Kaplan
Chairman of Panthera
The Arabian Leopard Initiatives… are a testament to the power of individuals to alter the trajectory of a species – away from extinction and towards rebirth.
The Global Alliance
This new partnership signifies RCU joining The Global Alliance for Wild Cats. The Global Alliance is an international coalition of the world’s leading environmental philanthropists who wish to preserve large-scale wildlife habitat and biodiversity by protecting the world’s wild cats. Conceived by Dr. Thomas S. Kaplan, Panthera’s Founder and Chairman of the Board, and his wife, Daphne Recanati Kaplan, the alliance provides critical support to Panthera and the NGOs with whom it partners for the development and implementation of science-based solutions that address the primary threats facing big cats. Learn more about the Alliance and other members of this leading group of conservationists here.

HH Prince Badr bin Abdullah Al-Saud
Minister of Culture and Governor of the Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU)
The signing of the agreement is a major milestone in our shared ambitions to reintroduce the Arabian leopard population in the region and join global partners to support the preservation of these wild cat populations worldwide. It is our duty to protect, conserve and build the population numbers to preserve the species from becoming a footnote of history.
The Birth of
"Beacons of Hope"
The Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) has announced the birth of twin Arabian leopard cubs – one male and one female – through a captive breeding program that aims to preserve, and eventually, reintroduce the cirtically endangered subspecies into the wild. This program is a key component of the Arabian Leopard Initiatives (ALI), including RCU’s newly formed leopard conservation collaboration with Panthera, to recover this little known desert-dwelling subspecies, and leopards around the globe.
A Lifeline for the
Last Leopards
Panthera Chairman and Co-Founder Dr. Thomas S. Kaplan’s new commentary on Mongabay highlights the need for champions to advocate for the world’s most vulnerable species and for "holistic and urgent" measures to prevent us from losing them forever. As a model of innovation in wildlife conservation, the Royal Commission for AlUla's Arabian Leopard Initiatives, in partnership with Panthera, will provide a lifeline for the critically endangered Arabian Leopard.

Rewilding and Renewing Hope in AlUla
The exciting birth of a new generation of gazelle fawns in Saudi Arabia’s Sharaan Nature Reserve represents a significant step forward in rewilding the AlUla region after decades of destabilization in this fragile environment. But the development of Sharaan Nature Reserve is about more than supporting the gazelles; it also means restoring an entire ecosystem with a view to eventually reintroducing the elusive and critically endangered Arabian leopard.
